CarPool's emissions reduction calculation methodology
Dr. Sarah JenkinsData-Driven Decarbonisation
Integrity is everything in emissions accounting. That's why our methodology is completely transparent and aligned with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines.
The Formula
We calculate avoided emissions using three primary data points:
- Distance: Verified GPS data from the driver's device.
- Vehicle Efficiency: Database lookup of the specific make/model/year.
- Occupancy: Cryptographically signed verification between driver and passenger devices.
If a 15km trip in a standard sedan normally emits 3kg of CO₂, and two people share the ride instead of driving separately, we've verifiably avoided 3kg of emissions. It's simple, auditable, and mathematically sound.
